Because I've written 17 chapters and I've only made it to December of the Marauders' second year at Hogwarts, I've decided to just go ahead and release the first "half" of the audiobook now. If I wait and do it all at once, it will be a massive file, and also, I don't like making people wait for things for no good reason. No, I don't know how long this story is going to end up being. Long. Very, very long.

The hell with it; I don't want to sit on this any longer.

Rating: T
Timeline: Marauders' 2nd Year (1972-1973)
Characters: Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, James Potter, Peter Pettigrew, Lily Evans, Severus Snape and many others

Chapter 12 Summary: Remus's gratitude at his friends' acceptance doesn't necessarily mean he thinks they are sane. (Remus, James & Peter's POV)
Author's Note: So very, very sorry for the long hiatus. I have no good excuse. My plan from here on is to update with a new chapter once every two weeks until I accumulate a comfortable backlog, and then maybe around the first of the year, switch to posting once a week. As a reward for your patience an understanding, I hereby present the longest chapter of ACOC to date.

Excerpt:
"But you're a Marauder!" protested Sirius, bouncing knees-first onto Remus's bed. "You can't not help with at least planning the Second Great and Wonderful Official Marauders' Halloween Prank!"

Remus drew his feet up the bed, eyeing Sirius warily for signs of imminent pouncing. Ever since Sirius's mad actions the previous week in the hospital wing, Remus had been more than a little nervous of him.

"Dunno how I got to be a Marauder," he mumbled. "Marauding's not really my thing."

"Sure it is," said Sirius. "You just haven't had enough practice. Anyway, James and I say you're a Marauder, and that means you are, so you have to help."

Chapter Synopsis: Sirius finds his purpose, and makes a choice he can't take back. (Peter, Remus & Sirius's POV)
Author's Note: A bit of a tradeoff; the emotionally intense chapters tend to be shorter. Hope that's okay. I should work on that whole "plot" angle, huh?

Excerpt:
"Remus's gone home again, has he?" James asked mildly.

Sirius cast James an annoyed look. "He knows."

"What?" asked Peter blankly, as James, brow furrowed, echoed the word.

"He knows," repeated Sirius, sitting up. "He knows we know. I told him last month."

"What?" said Peter again. Clearly he had missed something.

James frowned. "It was our secret. You should've told me you were going to tell him."

"It was his secret," scowled Sirius. "Don't need your permission to tell him, do I? You just said not to tell him last year because of exams; you didn't say anything about this year or about consulting you first."

"What?" Peter said, a small whine of irritation creeping into his voice. He was beginning to feel not only left out of the conversation, but invisible as well.

Chapter Synopsis: A DADA class on observation sets Sirius watching everyone but himself. (Sirius's POV)
Author's Note: Did I make the central observable phenomenon of this chapter obvious enough?

Excerpt:
"Focus, Black!" bawled Gandolfsson from the front of the classroom, where he presided over the chaos. "Keep your damn eyes on your opponent!"

Sirius clenched his jaw and did not reply as he and James switched off, James performing Shield charms to deflect Sirius's jinxes. So Sirius was quite surprised when he ended up flat on his back, head throbbing from where it had hit the edge of a desk.

"You okay?" Remus was kneeling over him, looking concerned.

"Yeah." He sat up. "What happened?"

"Snape," Remus muttered.

Sirius rubbed the back of his head, glancing across the room to where Snape's cold black eyes regarded him.

"Oops," said the Slytherin dispassionately. "Guess I missed."

Chapter Synopsis: Remus learns that his secret is not so secret as he had thought. (Remus's POV)
Warning: Graphic discussion of werewolf violence.
Author's Note: You want pre-slash? I got your pre-slash right here! Part of this chapter, written from Sirius's POV, was originally included in Chapter One of Survivor's Guilt: Padfoot's Tale. It has grown a bit in the retelling. For those of you who can't be bothered following long, unfinished chaptered fics, this chapter works as a one-shot.

Excerpt:
"It's nothing," Remus told him, reluctantly scooting over to make room for his friend. "Just feeling a bit under the weather. I'll be fine in the morning."

Putting out his wand, Sirius climbed up onto the bed and stuck his cold feet under the covers, forcing Remus to retreat even farther. "Sure you will. And next month, you'll go away again and come back and disturb my beauty sleep sobbing into your pillow," he teased, sighing theatrically and flopping onto his back. "I'll be old and wrinkled before my time, and you'll be to blame."

"My mother --" Remus said quickly.

"Is ill. You have to go home and see her. Yeah, I've heard that one before. Tell me another. The 'my mother is ill' excuse only works on Pete and the very gullible."

"But --" Remus protested, trying to ignore the knot of fear that formed in his stomach as Sirius casually ripped open the lie woven to protect him.

Chapter Synopsis: James tries out for the Quidditch team, and Remus gets a surprise. (James & Remus's PoV)
Author's Note: Ooh! What's that at the end of the chapter? Are Remus and Sirius flirting? I think they are!

Excerpt:
"What're you lot up to?" Remus slurred, sitting up in bed and looking around in confusion at the giftwrapped packages he had put his head on by accident. "What's all this?"

Sirius frowned. "It's your birthday, you idiot."

"It is?" said Remus feeling more confused than ever. "No it's not."

"Course it is," said Sirius, flouncing onto the bed in a huff. "Tenth of September. I heard you telling Evans last year."

James and Peter laughed. "Merlin's pants! Imagine forgetting your own birthday!"

Remus stared at his friends in openmouthed surprise. Now that Sirius mentioned it, he did remember the conversation he'd had with Lily the previous winter, but he had never expected -- "You guys got me presents?"

Chapter Synopsis: The boys have their first DADA lesson with their new teacher, and it's not what they expected. (Sirius's PoV)
Author's Note: I was going to wait until Saturday to post this, but...I just couldn't. This chapter is a bit shorter than usual, but I loved writing it so damn much that I don't really care. Don't you love it when a character just comes to life and starts talking?

Excerpt:
Gandolfsson fixed the class with an icy blue glare that seemed to touch each face. "War is coming," he said. "I know it. You know it. There is a great need right now for men of my profession. So what am I doing here? Why am I wasting my valuable time on empty-headed schoolchildren when I should be at the Ministry, formulating a plan of action with Minister Boridge?"

No hands went up this time.

"I am here," he continued, "to discover whether any of you have what it takes to become Aurors. Our men will be dropping like flies before long, and we'll need replacements. However temporary." His words seemed to bounce off the stone walls of the classroom as if they were solid -- facts that even children of their age should know without telling. "Failing that, Dumbledore wishes me to see to it that as many of you as possible acquire the skills you will need to survive this war when it comes."

Chapter Synopsis: The boys start their second year at Hogwarts and are introduced to their new DADA professor. (Remus, James & Sirius's PoV)
Author's Note: Before you laugh your collective asses off over the name of the new DADA professor, this is another one I've borrowed from history. It belonged to a gent living in 8th century Denmark, and it was really far too good a name to pass up.

Excerpt:
"That must be him," he muttered, elbowing Sirius and nodding to a man seated at Dumbledore's right hand.

"Him who?" asked Fabian, craning past them for a better look at the stranger.

"The new Defence teacher," James told the twins in a hushed voice. "Dad says he's an Auror."

The Prewetts goggled for a moment.

"Is that --?" breathed Fabian.

"It can't be!" Gideon said, shaking his head.

"I thought he was dead," said Fabian.

"Who?" James looked back and forth between the twins, confused.

Excerpt:
"Motorcycles and music and films!" declared Sirius, practically dancing his way out of the cinema. "Muggles are brilliant!"

"Hush, you," Mrs Potter reminded him fondly as several curious glances were cast in their direction.

Remus grinned. Sirius's joy was irresistible. In fact, Remus was beginning to notice that it was almost impossible to be near the other boy and not be affected by his moods and opinions. I should be more careful, he thought. Control, right? I shouldn't let him sway me. No good could come of allowing his capricious friend to influence him like that.

Excerpt:
Marcellus's mouth tightened slightly. "Remus, we've talked before about controlling your temper. You have to remember it's just the moon's influence making you feel --"

"The moon can bloody well go get stuffed!" Remus burst out, nearly upsetting his water glass.

"Language, Remus," said his mother warningly.

Remus ignored her, glaring at his father instead.

Marcellus gave his son a steady look. "I hope you're doing a better job of keeping your emotions in check at school, son," he said evenly. "You could get yourself into very real trouble if you're not."

This Chapter: James shows Sirius around Godric's Hollow, and Sirius is undone by kindness. (Sirius's PoV)
Author's Note: Apologies again for the lack of Remus in this chapter. This and the last were supposed to be a single chapter, but it ran too long. I promise puppy snuggles in Ch 4. Is it creepy that I made James sit and eat cakes on his own future gravesite?

Excerpt:
"Have your family been here all that time?" Sirius asked as they wandered over to an empty patch of grass a couple of rows back from the Dumbledore stone and sat down to eat the rest of the slightly squashed cakes Bathilda Bagshot had given them.

"Yeah," said James comfortably, reclining on the grass with a cake and a contented sigh, one arm bent behind his head. "The Potters, at least. Mum's family come from the south originally."

Sirius stuffed the last cake into his mouth and regarded his friend, envying his sense of belonging. James was as much at ease here, among the graves of his ancestors, as he was in his own bedroom. Sirius's own parents had nothing like this to pass on to their sons. Everything they had to offer felt empty compared to it.

This Chapter: Sirius begins to realise that "family" means something different than he always thought. (Sirius's PoV)
Author's Note: Sorry for the long wait since the last chapter. I took some time off to write (and perfect, insofar as is possible) my entry for the [livejournal.com profile] rs_games, which will be taking place in October, and then got bunnied for a porny oneshot spinoff from that. I'll be sure to share as soon as I'm allowed. Sorry, too, for the lack of Remus in this chapter. I've had to split this one, since it was getting really long, so that means no Remus in the next chapter either. I promise I'll make it up to you soon. Can't believe how much time I wasted trying to find parallels to the Marauders' story in Norse Mythology.

Excerpt:
"Jamie, is that you?" A smiling, plain-faced woman poked her head into the room. She had curly black hair threaded with silver, which she wore tied carelessly back in a kerchief. A heavenly scent wafted around her.

James's face split into a grin. "I've brought Sirius, Mum. It's okay if he stays for a bit, isn't it?"

"Pleased to meet you, Ma'am." Sirius bobbed his head awkwardly.

The woman's smile widened, echoing her son's exactly. "Sirius! How wonderful to finally meet you! I hope you like treacle tarts; I think I've made too many." She disappeared, presumably back to the kitchen, leaving the scent of treacle in her wake.

Author's Note: Oh my God! Year One is finished! I'm planning on taking a short break to write my entry for the [livejournal.com profile] rs_games, so it may be a couple of weeks before I get going on Year Two.

Excerpt:
Sirius was staring at Remus. His words, coupled with the exam results, had suddenly caused Sirius to remember something. Something inconsequential. Something guaranteed to assuage his disappointment over his own results. A sly smile uncurled itself on his lips.

"Uh-oh," said Peter.

Sirius turned his head to regard James. "You passed History of Magic."

"I know," said James, puzzled. "Why does that --? Oh!" His hazel eyes went suddenly wide with comprehension.

"You said you'd do it," Sirius reminded him.

James looked thoughtful. "I did say so, didn't I?"

"I'd hate to see you go back on your sworn word as a Gryffindor." Sirius was grinning in earnest now.

"That would never do, would it?" James shook his head gravely.

Peter and Remus were looking back and forth between the two of them, bemused.

"What're you --?" Remus began.

"Back in a minute, lads," said James, turning suddenly toward the great staircase.

This Chapter: The boys survive the exams, the Quidditch final yields unexpected results, and Remus and Lily patch things up. (Sirius, James, Peter & Remus's PoV)
Author's Note: Right. So after weighing the pros and cons, I've decided to split this chapter yet again. It was going to be at least 7000 words if I didn't, but I decided was just way too long. I should stop trying to predict these things in advance. I apologise for the chapter title, which I came up with at the last minute while half asleep. Did I mention I hate writing Quidditch?

Excerpt:
Remus looked pained. "It's not that we're not speaking, she's just --"

"Not talking to you?" Sirius suggested, rolling onto his front to look at Remus.

"Yeah, something like that."

"I still can't get over the fact that you told her you love her in front of all of us and Snape, too," said James, shaking his head.

"Told you." Remus's ears were pink. "She's just a friend."

"Do you love us, too, Remus?" asked Sirius, batting his eyelashes.

Remus looked down his nose at the dark-haird boy. "I'll admit to moments of fondness. I usually just lie down until they pass."

Excerpt:
Remus took a deep breath. "Severus -- I just wanted to say that Lily's told me some really great things about you. I mean, I know you're ace at Potions, but she says you're really amazing at Defence Against the Dark Arts as well." What Lily had in fact told him was that Snape's marks in Defence were almost as good as his own, and certainly worthy of Remus's respect.

"I'd be happy to show you a few hexes, Lupin," said Snape, smiling nastily.

"Perhaps later," Remus said hastily, before Snape's fingers could do more than twitch toward his wand pocket. "What I really wanted to say is that I respect your skill as much as I respect your friendship with Lily. I know you care about her and want her to be happy. I do, too. If we keep sniping at one another, it's only going to upset her. Can't we find some way to make this work?"

This Chapter: Sirius and James set out to confirm their theory about Remus's secret. (Sirius's PoV)
Author's Note: This story (if you count the two prologues) is now officially longer than Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. And it just keeps on getting longer. Sirius was supposed to get along better with Firenze, but it turns out he doesn't much like anyone usurping his self-appointed duty as Remus's protector.

Excerpt:
"So what now?" whispered James once the silence had returned. "Back to the dorm?"

Sirius bit his lip. "I want to go down to the forest," he said. "You don't have to come if you don't want to."

James shook his head. "You think I'd let you go alone and maybe get eaten by one of those giant spider things? No way. Someone's got to watch your back."

Sirius grinned. This was all part of what made James the most brilliant best mate in the world. He really hoped he wasn't going to have to hit him. "All right, then. Let's go."

This Chapter: The boys define the shapes of their friendship in the wake of the Easter Murders. (Sirius, Remus, James's PoV)
Author's Note: This has now officially surpassed Moony's Tale and become the longest thing I have ever written. Other things were supposed to happen in this chapter, but then Remus and Sirius got to talking and almost snuggling, and I had to bump the action over to the next one.

Excerpt:
Sirius snorted. "If you had any idea what pure-bloods think of Hufflepuff -- But yeah, Regs is loyal. At least, he is until he's scared."

"He's only ten," admonished Remus.

"Yeah, well, I'm eleven," Sirius said tartly. "And your sister's how old? Eight? She didn't look scared to be surrounded by wizards, even after you told her some of us are mad Muggle-killers. And she's a girl."

Remus smiled drowsily at that. "Nat would be in Gryffindor in a second. No question."

"Too thick to be scared, eh?" Sirius teased.

Remus nudged his friend's leg with his toe. "Just like you. I assume your brother got all the brains in the family. What about Ravenclaw?"

Excerpt:
EVENING PROPHET
2 April 1972

Domestic Dispute Ends in Tragedy
An Easter Sunday row between Mrs Antigone Atwood of Stotfold, Bedfordshire, and her husband George Atwood, a Muggle, ended in murder when Mrs Atwood turned the Killing Curse on her spouse.

Mrs Atwood, a professional crup breeder, claims not to recall the incident, but interviews conducted with the couple's children before they were Obliviated indicate a dispute over appropriate places to hide the children's Easter eggs, a Muggle tradition adopted by the family.

The Atwoods had been married for eight years, and had two children together, ages five and three.

Mrs Atwood has been taken into Ministry custody, pending trial, and the children have been placed in foster care for the time being. Neighbours claim this was not the first domestic dispute at the Atwood residence in recent weeks.

Use of the Killing Curse, one of three curses classified as "Unforgiveable", is punishable by a life sentence in Azkaban Prison.

Author's Note: Sirius may not realise he's in love for a few years yet, but he so clearly already is. Writing him is an absolute joy. Warning: James is kind of a dickhead in this chapter.

Excerpt:
The silence grew between them. Sirius desperately wanted to say something useful, but he had no idea what. Remus was fidgeting, as if he wanted to be off.

"Can I come with you?" Sirius blurted out at last. Surely if there was a witness, no one would dare --

Remus blinked. "Why would you want to come home with me?"

"No reason," Sirius fumbled. "I just thought it would be -- fun."

"Well, you can't," Remus said slowly, as if Sirius were a bit simple. "You'd need McGonagall's permission, and you'd miss class."

"Yeah. I guess so."

"I'm late. I have to go." Remus moved to step past him.

Sirius laid a hand on his arm as he passed. "See you tomorrow," he said quietly.

"Yeah," said Remus, not meeting his eyes. "See you."
