I finished chapters for all the Marauders' parents last year, but now I've gone back and added Lily and Snape's families as well, and recorded a podfic. This series of shorts is compliant with A Conspiracy of Cartographers, and acts as a sort of prequel.

Summary: 1958-66: Remus, Sirius, James, Lily, Peter, Severus. Six children from six very different families. Twelve parents who only exist between the lines of canon, but who were instrumental in shaping the characters we love, and the story as we know it.

Excerpt from "Rose Evans":

Rose was not her real name. She had left that behind with everything else when she ran away from the base and her father's cruelty, her mother's indifference. She learned to copy the accents of the other children, bought a train ticket to London, and disappeared. For a while, she lived on the streets, trading her body for the money men gave her, because it meant surviving for another day.

When the truant officers took her, she refused to tell them who she was or where she came from. They sent her to Wool's Home for Children. That was where she met Harry Evans. His parents were dead. She told him hers were, too. He told her that her green eyes were pretty. She said she liked his red hair.

My plan was to have this up much earlier in the weekend. Sorry. But here it is! So much dialogue, most of it written during bouts of exhaustion. Hope it's coherent.

Excerpt:
"They're going to figure it out," insisted Remus. "They're too clever not to."

"They won't," Sirius soothed. "It'll be fine."

"They will." Remus was in no mood for baseless assurances.

"They might," said Peter.

"Shut it, Pete," snapped Sirius. "You're not helping."

Chapter 18: Dunheath
pica_scribit: (Gryffindor - MWPP - Conspiracy)
Hey, I did another one! 586 words from Joseph Potter this time.

Excerpt:
Neither the early start of the day, nor the light morning mist could put a damper on the Potter family's spirits. By the time they found their seats, the sun was beginning to peek through the clouds, promising excellent weather for the match.

"It's not the top box," said Joe Potter, "but they're decent seats."

"They're very good," his wife agreed. "Here, Jamie, you've got a smudge on your nose."

A few years back, some of you may remember, I wrote a ~500 word fic called A Brush With Destiny, about baby Remus and baby Sirius meeting for the first time at a Ministry Christmas party. The story was from the POV of Remus's mother, Sylvia Lupin, a Muggle. Well, today I got bunnied to do similar mini-fics from the POV of each of the Marauders' parents. So I've changed the name of the story, and today I added James's mother, Eleanor Potter, to the mix. I'll try not to get too sidetracked by this one.

Excerpt:
The early years of their marriage had been filled with a monthly round of hope followed by disappointment, but now, almost eighteen years later, she had resigned herself to childlessness. She was past forty now, and her husband nearly fifty. They never even talked about it anymore.

ETA: I wrote another one. Meet Almira Pettigrew. TW for mentioned domestic violence, transphobia, and internalised misogyny.

Excerpt:
It didn't matter how hard Almira Perkins tried; she had not been able to save any of them. After their parents' early deaths, she had done her best to raise her younger siblings. She had married, too young, to a man with a good job, in order to provide them with a stable home life. Instead, he had beaten her and taken away her wand. He had sneered at her brother Constantine, calling him by his birth name, Constance, and telling him he could never be a "real" boy. He had led their baby sister, Delilah, over to the side of Grindelwald, and ultimately, to her death. He had been tried, found guilty of crimes against Muggles and Muggleborn wizards, and had died in Azkaban prison.

Chapter 17 is up!

Excerpt:

Alice Finch, a third year Gryffindor, raised her hand, and James nodded to her. "I'd like to learn about the hiding magic Gandolfsson talked about. That sounds really useful."

"I want to practice what to do if you have to face more than one person at a time," said Rishi Patil.

"I want to learn how to tell if someone is under the Imperius curse," said Egbert Bones.

"I want to learn silent magic," said Lily Evans.

James felt overwhelmed. He didn't know the first thing about any of magic people seemed interested in learning. He didn't realise he was giving Remus a pleading look until his friend was beside him, raising his hands for quiet.

Summary: Excuse me while I pour a bucket of subtext on a couple of unsuspecting 12-year-olds.

Excerpt:
"D'you want to go outside, Moony?" Sirius asked.

Remus shook his head. He looked better than he had in Potions, but he still seemed exhausted and unwell. "I'm going to meditate for a bit," he said, voice barely above a whisper. "You can go. I'll be fine."

"It's too cold out for me," Sirius told James. "You go ahead; I'll see Moony back to the room."

Summary: The November moon and Sirius's newly tainted blood combine to exacerbate his quarrel with James.

Excerpt:
He felt restless, like he wanted to run and run and never stop. Taking the great staircase two steps at a time, Sirius almost flew to the third floor landing. He didn't want to go back to Gryffindor tower yet; all the rooms there were too small. Instead, he sprinted down an empty corridor, taking turns without paying any attention to where he was going. This part of the castle was cold and dark and silent, with only the faint glow of silver moonlight through the unglazed windows to light his way. Sirius yelled as he ran until his throat was raw, throwing inarticulate rage at the darkness.

Thank you for your patience. I think I figured out part of what was giving me so much trouble: this chapter has a shit-ton of dialogue in it.

EXCERPT:
The feeling was hard to put into words. It was somewhere between a flutter and a tug, and he couldn't say whether it was in his belly or only in his mind.

The dormitory door opened behind him, and there it was again, just at the edge of his senses. Sirius smiled to himself, but didn't look up from his Transfiguration homework. He didn't have to.

"Hey, Moony."

So I got my hair cut last week. My roommate says I have "anime boy" hair, but clearly she is wrong because she hasn't read Harry Potter. What I have is more correctly termed "James Potter" hair. It's actually pretty tame here. You should see what it looks like most of the time.

Chapter 13 Summary: The brewing war touches the Marauders' lives for the first time. (Sirius & Remus's POV)
Note: I know I've been awful about updating this. So sorry. Apparently guilt is the only thing that can break through my writers block.

Excerpt:
Sirius scowled, shooing the owl away and glancing sidelong at James, ready to deflect any questions. But his best friend was still staring at his own short letter, a troubled expression on his face.

"Everything okay?" Sirius asked.

James looked surprised to find that Sirius was still there. He shook his head. "It's from Mum. Dad's in hospital."

Highland Fling is giving me a problem, but it's a good kind of problem. It is this: James has demanded that his part of the story be told, and there's nothing I can do but let him have his say. It turns out he has a lot of thoughts and feelings. Seriously. I'm about 2200 words into Ch 10, and I estimate it's about halfway done (I think we all know what my estimates are worth). I do not want to give James more than one POV chapter in what is supposed to be a R/S romance novel, and I certainly do not want to give him two in a row. So that means he's probably going to get one very long chapter. Maybe the longest in the whole story. Not completely comfortable with this, but what can I do? ;p

I'm hoping to get HF finished by the new year and get back to ACOC (finally!). The main problem I've been having with that is that Remus is currently Scottish in my head, and I can't switch back and forth between the stories without getting a kind of character whiplash. So that's where I'm at with that.

I hope everyone is having Happy Holidays, of whatever sort you happen to celebrate. Can't believe it's only three days to Christmas.... So much to do!

Chapter 12 Summary: Remus's gratitude at his friends' acceptance doesn't necessarily mean he thinks they are sane. (Remus, James & Peter's POV)
Author's Note: So very, very sorry for the long hiatus. I have no good excuse. My plan from here on is to update with a new chapter once every two weeks until I accumulate a comfortable backlog, and then maybe around the first of the year, switch to posting once a week. As a reward for your patience an understanding, I hereby present the longest chapter of ACOC to date.

Excerpt:
"But you're a Marauder!" protested Sirius, bouncing knees-first onto Remus's bed. "You can't not help with at least planning the Second Great and Wonderful Official Marauders' Halloween Prank!"

Remus drew his feet up the bed, eyeing Sirius warily for signs of imminent pouncing. Ever since Sirius's mad actions the previous week in the hospital wing, Remus had been more than a little nervous of him.

"Dunno how I got to be a Marauder," he mumbled. "Marauding's not really my thing."

"Sure it is," said Sirius. "You just haven't had enough practice. Anyway, James and I say you're a Marauder, and that means you are, so you have to help."

I get so intimidated by writing action sequences or scenes with lots of logistical issues. Emotional scenes and dialogue? No problem! But the other stuff is like pulling teeth. Maybe I really can still do this, though. I discovered a small canon issue involving the location of the Slytherin dormitories halfway through writing the chapter that completely changed the outcome and almost got James and Sirius expelled. Sorry, boys. I'm having some fond feelings for Peter at the moment, as he is being rather endearing in a pathetic kind of way.

The good news is that I have a first draft of ACOC 2.12. At almost 6400 words, it's shaping up to be one of the longest chapters in ACOC so far, but I just looked at my notes and realised there's one or two details I forgot to include. Can't believe I'm at 61,000 words and I'm only up to October of 1972. Can't believe how tired I am right now. Whatever else happens (unless I drop dead between now and then, knock on wood), there will definitely be a new chapter posted by the end of this month.

Ta so much for your patience.

ETA: The really laughable thing is that, unlike Harry, no one is out to get these kids, and yet there is still so much going on that I'm having a hard time keeping track of it all. Sometimes I worry that I will run out of plot and the series will become repetitive. Other times, I worry that every single one of the Years is going to be as long and complicated as OotP, and I will be about a hundred years old by the time I finish.

Chapter Synopsis: Sirius finds his purpose, and makes a choice he can't take back. (Peter, Remus & Sirius's POV)
Author's Note: A bit of a tradeoff; the emotionally intense chapters tend to be shorter. Hope that's okay. I should work on that whole "plot" angle, huh?

Excerpt:
"Remus's gone home again, has he?" James asked mildly.

Sirius cast James an annoyed look. "He knows."

"What?" asked Peter blankly, as James, brow furrowed, echoed the word.

"He knows," repeated Sirius, sitting up. "He knows we know. I told him last month."

"What?" said Peter again. Clearly he had missed something.

James frowned. "It was our secret. You should've told me you were going to tell him."

"It was his secret," scowled Sirius. "Don't need your permission to tell him, do I? You just said not to tell him last year because of exams; you didn't say anything about this year or about consulting you first."

"What?" Peter said, a small whine of irritation creeping into his voice. He was beginning to feel not only left out of the conversation, but invisible as well.

Chapter Synopsis: James tries out for the Quidditch team, and Remus gets a surprise. (James & Remus's PoV)
Author's Note: Ooh! What's that at the end of the chapter? Are Remus and Sirius flirting? I think they are!

Excerpt:
"What're you lot up to?" Remus slurred, sitting up in bed and looking around in confusion at the giftwrapped packages he had put his head on by accident. "What's all this?"

Sirius frowned. "It's your birthday, you idiot."

"It is?" said Remus feeling more confused than ever. "No it's not."

"Course it is," said Sirius, flouncing onto the bed in a huff. "Tenth of September. I heard you telling Evans last year."

James and Peter laughed. "Merlin's pants! Imagine forgetting your own birthday!"

Remus stared at his friends in openmouthed surprise. Now that Sirius mentioned it, he did remember the conversation he'd had with Lily the previous winter, but he had never expected -- "You guys got me presents?"

Author's Note: Before you laugh your collective asses off over the name of the new DADA professor, this is another one I've borrowed from history. It belonged to a gent living in 8th century Denmark, and it was really far too good a name to pass up.

Excerpt:
"That must be him," he muttered, elbowing Sirius and nodding to a man seated at Dumbledore's right hand.

"Him who?" asked Fabian, craning past them for a better look at the stranger.

"The new Defence teacher," James told the twins in a hushed voice. "Dad says he's an Auror."

The Prewetts goggled for a moment.

"Is that --?" breathed Fabian.

"It can't be!" Gideon said, shaking his head.

"I thought he was dead," said Fabian.

"Who?" James looked back and forth between the twins, confused.

So I had a dream the night before last. I was with Remus and Sirius and James and Lily. Because we're all best friends, right? Anyway, Remus admitted he was pregnant, and he was really embarrassed about it. Lily was being all motherly and sympathetic, but James and Sirius were both giving him a really hard time about it. So I slapped them.

Maybe I've been spending too much time on fandom lately....

This Chapter: James shows Sirius around Godric's Hollow, and Sirius is undone by kindness. (Sirius's PoV)
Author's Note: Apologies again for the lack of Remus in this chapter. This and the last were supposed to be a single chapter, but it ran too long. I promise puppy snuggles in Ch 4. Is it creepy that I made James sit and eat cakes on his own future gravesite?

Excerpt:
"Have your family been here all that time?" Sirius asked as they wandered over to an empty patch of grass a couple of rows back from the Dumbledore stone and sat down to eat the rest of the slightly squashed cakes Bathilda Bagshot had given them.

"Yeah," said James comfortably, reclining on the grass with a cake and a contented sigh, one arm bent behind his head. "The Potters, at least. Mum's family come from the south originally."

Sirius stuffed the last cake into his mouth and regarded his friend, envying his sense of belonging. James was as much at ease here, among the graves of his ancestors, as he was in his own bedroom. Sirius's own parents had nothing like this to pass on to their sons. Everything they had to offer felt empty compared to it.

This Chapter: Sirius begins to realise that "family" means something different than he always thought. (Sirius's PoV)
Author's Note: Sorry for the long wait since the last chapter. I took some time off to write (and perfect, insofar as is possible) my entry for the [livejournal.com profile] rs_games, which will be taking place in October, and then got bunnied for a porny oneshot spinoff from that. I'll be sure to share as soon as I'm allowed. Sorry, too, for the lack of Remus in this chapter. I've had to split this one, since it was getting really long, so that means no Remus in the next chapter either. I promise I'll make it up to you soon. Can't believe how much time I wasted trying to find parallels to the Marauders' story in Norse Mythology.

Excerpt:
"Jamie, is that you?" A smiling, plain-faced woman poked her head into the room. She had curly black hair threaded with silver, which she wore tied carelessly back in a kerchief. A heavenly scent wafted around her.

James's face split into a grin. "I've brought Sirius, Mum. It's okay if he stays for a bit, isn't it?"

"Pleased to meet you, Ma'am." Sirius bobbed his head awkwardly.

The woman's smile widened, echoing her son's exactly. "Sirius! How wonderful to finally meet you! I hope you like treacle tarts; I think I've made too many." She disappeared, presumably back to the kitchen, leaving the scent of treacle in her wake.
