Here's me wishing Harry Potter and (yesterday) Neville Longbottom, my [livejournal.com profile] prophecy_boys, a very happy 30th birthday! Yes, I'm a dork. But at least I feel less old when I realise they're only a couple of years younger than me.

In other news, someone needs to kick my butt and tell me to get back to work on A Conspiracy of Cartographers. Because I seem to have been writing porn. Sure, it's a heartwarming tale of how a threesome might have brought about a more satisfactory conclusion to the First War for MWPP + Lily, but it's *not helpful* in that I can't really share it until the [livejournal.com profile] rs_games finish up in October, since it's a sort-of-spinoff of the story I'm submitting for that.

I also wasted a bunch of time this week going back through my journal archive and tagging the fuck out of absolutely everything. Just in case anyone ever needs to find out in a hurry how many fandom-related dreams I've had. :p

Right. Back to writing for real now.

I guess it's about time I had another look at my pre-Deathly Hallows theories, and found out how many I got right. Shall we see how I did?

Many DH SPOILERS follow.... )

Hmmm...looks like I got quite a lot wrong, but at the same time, did not do too badly either. Go me!

I've just finished my chapter-a-day close analysis of the HP books for [livejournal.com profile] deathly_cntdwn and [livejournal.com profile] read_hp, during which time I've taken copious notes (ie, around 15-35 per chapter) on various thoughts, theories, and squees over JKR's genius in general. I've more or less let this thing eat my life over the past several months, and it's not over yet. In 53 hours, I will have Deathly Hallows in my hands. I plan to devour it as quickly as possible, taking just a few notes along the way, and then begin a slower chapter-by-chapter analysis over the coming month.

What do I want from this book? Well, there are three things that I think will bother me if I don't get them:

1) I want there to be more to the Tonks subplot than we've been given so far. It felt even more "off" during this reading than the first two.
2) I want a really good death scene that will have me in floods of tears. Preferably Remus.
3) I want Harry and Neville to live so that I will have a postwar 'ship I really like without resorting to AU.

There are lots of other smaller things I would like to see, but I trust JKR to provide us with an interesting story, full of plenty of twists and turns that we never expected. I'm ready. Are you?

This time tomorrow, I'll be at Sectus! Woo!

Does anyone else have a really hard time with the Leaky Cauldron website? It seems like every time I go there or click on any of their links, my browser stalls for about five minutes. I have a good connection speed and there are no other websites I use regularly that give me this kind of trouble. It's really quite annoying and frustrating, since TLC is the best way to keep up with HP news. I've gotten to the point where I hardly go there at all because I just can't be bothered waiting around for my laptop to become useful again.

I'm trying to find links to the OotP London Premier photos, but the only ones I can find are through TLC, and it's just not worth it. Does anyone have a good link to any photos of Matthew Lewis (Neville) from that event?

Title: The Night Before: Brave
Author: [livejournal.com profile] pica_scribit
Rating: PG
Word Count: 1608
Genre: Drama, slash, introspection
Characters: Neville
Pairing(s): Neville/Harry, Neville/Ginny, Harry/Ginny, Ron/Hermione
Synopsis: AU diverging from canon at the end of OotP. On the eve of the final battle, Neville makes his peace with his life.
Timeline: Spring 1998
Disclaimer: I am not J. K. Rowling. I own nothing. Please don't sue me.
Author's Note: Neville's story stands on its own, but is part of a larger fic in which the whereabouts of various characters on the eve of the final battle is explored in chapters which take place concurrently. Feedback is my drug of choice. As usual, please report any errors or inconsistencies.

Here he was, on the eve of what might be the definitive battle against Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters, and instead of fear and worry, Neville's mind was full of Harry. It always had been. He used to rationalise it -- hero-worship, admiration, friendship -- but not anymore. He would be facing death tomorrow and he could not lie to himself any longer.

I'm doing a close read of HBP Ch 9 tonight, and I have been struck with a new theory involving Gran Longbottom and evil!McGonagall. I just had to share:

McGonagall: "It's high time your grandmother learned to be proud of the grandson she's got, rather than the one she thinks she ought to have." Does Augusta Longbottom know something about the prophecy? If Neville's parents knew anything about why Voldemort was targeting them, they might have told her. Does she wish her grandson was The Chosen One?

Augusta Longbottom considers Charms a "soft option". We learn that she failed her own Charms OWL. And McGonagall knows this. McGonagall started teaching in 1956 (according to the information she gives Umbridge in OotP). If Neville's father was the same age as the Marauders (and if he was already an Auror at the time he was tortured, he cannot have been younger), then he was born in about 1958. Augusta had to have sat her OWLs before McGonagall started teaching to have a child by that time. If McGonagall knows her results, it can only be because they went to school together, and were close enough personally and in age to compare marks. THEREFORE: Augusta Longbottom was at school with Voldemort. Also, new theory: Augusta and Minerva are somehow related. These two strict old Gryffindor ladies (in their green robes) are very close in age and treat Neville almost identically, right down to the fact that they are now both apparently proud of him. Sisters? But surely Neville would know.... If McGonagall is evil, and if she is somehow related to Neville, she might have convinced Voldemort to go after Harry instead. How do you like *that* for a theory? And I get all that from McGonagall saying that Neville's Gran failed her Charms OWL.

I've suddenly become very interested in the idea of Neville/Harry/Ginny, and I think my feelings about that threesome is very similar to my feelings about Plato/Jim/Judy in Rebel Without a Cause. You might even draw parallels between the characters, though of course they are very different. Plato is as lost and abandoned and parentless and picked on as Neville, and admires Jim as Neville does Harry. Jim and Harry are equally angsty teens with a strong desire to take charge and take action, trying to learn how to be men in a difficult and confusing world. And Judy, well, she's stuck halfway between being a girl and being a woman; she's a bit of a wild one, and capable of great passion.

Damn, I love that movie.... You really could cut the slashy subtext with a knife. It's not even that subtle. Sal Mineo (Plato) and James Dean (Jim) have enormous on-screen chemistry -- moreso than Dean and Natalie Wood (Judy) -- possibly because Mineo was gay and Dean (if the stories are true) was at least bisexual. The movie also has an air of tragedy, since all three stars died well before their time, and James Dean before the film was even released.

The other day when I went to post Linked, I learned that LJ had no Harry/Neville community. Considering the number of communities pairing not only Harry, but also Neville, with various other characters, this really surprised me. I would expect this to be a reasonably popular pairing. So I've now gone and created yet another LJ comm. It's not just for slash; I also welcome stories of Harry and Neville's friendship, or stories which feature both of them prominently. Come join [livejournal.com profile] prophesy_boys.

Title: Linked
Rating: K+
Word Count: ~1700
Genre: Drama, Light Slash
Pairing: Harry/Neville
Synopsis: In the days following the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, Harry can't sleep. He decides to talk to the one person who might understand.
Note: I don't write trio-generation fic very often, and I never write trio-generation slash. But I've been rereading OotP, and this tiny, fluffy bunny would not leave me alone tonight. Why is there no Harry/Neville comm on LJ?

Ever since that horrible night the previous week, and the dawn revelations in Dumbledore's office, Harry had been very aware of Neville. Watching his movements, listening to his words, noticing quirks of his personality he had never seen before. Neville, who might so easily have had Harry's life, had it not been for some unfathomable notion of Voldemort's that Harry posed the greater threat.
