I am delighted to announce that Trans*Figured now has its own page on my website! Upon the advice of the incomparable [personal profile] themessrs, who has my undying gratitude, I have expanded Part II by ... er ... 3000 words. Meep! Looks like this is going to be another one of those stories that gets away from me. Enjoy!

Part I * Part II

Genre: AU, drama, angst, hurt/comfort, romance

Warnings: Trans* character written by cis author, references to Dark magic, attempted suicide
Characters: Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, James Potter, Peter Pettigrew, Severus Snape, Albus Dumbledore, Poppy Pomfrey, Mr & Mrs Lupin (OCs)

Note: I've been feeling recently that there is an under-representation of trans* characters in fanworks. Which is to say, I've never encountered one. This story is my attempt to improve trans* visibility in HP fanfic. I acknowledge that there are probably as many ways to be trans* as there are trans* people in the world, and I know that this story will probably not ring true with everyone's experiences, but hopefully I haven't made too much of a mess of things. I apologise in advance for any problematic elements that may have sneaked into the story in spite of my best intentions. I encourage everyone to check out Not Your Mom's Trans 101. It contains some great advice on being an effective and compassionate trans* ally.

Title: Trans*Figured
Author: [personal profile] pica_scribit (complete fic archive)
Word Count: ~2100 and counting
Genre: AU, drama, angst, hurt/comfort
Rating: T (so far)

Note: This bunny bit me the other day and wouldn't let go. I don't know when I've ever been so nervous about posting something I've written. I apologise in advance if I've made a mess of this.

He could not really remember what it had been like, Before. He had been too young. Sometimes he wished he could recall what it had felt like to be whole -- to be himself -- but more and more as he grew older, he felt that knowing what he had lost would be too much to bear. Mostly, Remus Lupin just felt alone.

Making friends was difficult. His Special Circumstances made him awkward and self-conscious around other children. The secret locked inside him was too big and too complicated for him to explain in a way that they would understand. His parents loved him, and they did what they could to ease the path for him, but they did not always seem to know what to do with him, either. They researched spells and bought expensive potions that left Remus feeling sick and weak for days, but they could find nothing to reverse what had been done to him.

I didn't forget about Tuesday this time; I was just sitting on this post until I had something to give you guys. So here's the news of the week:

1) PDF ebook of the original 2005 version of Padfoot's Tale in all its cringe-worthy glory!

2) PDF ebook of Highland Fling! This is a newly-edited version, with a few small changes, including a short scene added to the end of Chapter One. It may be a cheesy romance, but this is easily one of the stories I am proudest of. (NOTE: New versions of Ch 4-11 are not up on the website yet. Coming soon!) Up now!

3) Last but certainly not least, NEW FIC! Allow me to present an itty-bitty, fluffy sequel to Highland Fling, which I just wrote this morning:

Title: Wolf Stone Jewelers

Anyone thinking of going to Lubricus this summer? For those who don't know, Lubricus is a Harry Potter slash convention held every August in Seattle. This is the last week to qualify for the early-bird registration discount. You can register and get more info here. There seem to be a lot of Draco/Harry and Harry/Snape 'shippers involved in the planning, but I'd love to have a strong Puppy 'shipper presence there, if possible!

A few years ago, when Prince Caspian hit the theatres, I was struck with a thought. The creators of the film made the interesting decision to invent a bit of a romance between Caspian and Susan which was not present in the source material. And no one really batted an eye. (Well, hardly anyone.) As someone who grew up reading the Narnia books, and who now writes fanfic, I am totally cool with this sort of non-canonical romance. But the portrayal of Caspian/Susan on the big screen made me wonder how long it would be before we would see, say, Caspian/Peter. It's just a different pairing, not present in the source material. What's the big deal? But it would be, to some.

I'm starting to think that the day may not be as far off as I once thought. Because Sherlock Holmes. The Holmes fandom is one of the oldest out there. In fact, it could be argued that it was the first true fandom, as we think of the term today. More than eighty years after Arthur Conan Doyle's death, his books and the characters he created are still enormously popular. We see them brought to life time and again on the big and small screens. In just the past few years, we have Fox's House, the BBC's Sherlock, and a pair of Guy Ritchie films. And the subtext is getting closer and closer to the surface, to the point where it's barely "sub" at all. The actors, writers, and directors talk about it. Fandom is ablaze with it. Hell, I haven't even seen the Ritchie films, or the new episodes of Sherlock (DO NOT SPOIL ME!), but there's no way to avoid hearing that Holmes/Watson is practically canon anymore.

Is this progress? What would Doyle think, and does that really matter? Will we start to see similar things happening in other popular adaptations of beloved classics? I guess we'll see.

Updated my profile to add the following info:

I have been politically left-of-centre for almost my entire adult life, but in 2010 I had what I tend to think of as a conversion experience to leftist politics. I consider myself to be a proudly pro-queer, pansexual (or perhaps more accurately, "heteroflexible") feminist socialist, with religious beliefs falling somewhere between liberal Episcopalianism and pagan nature-worship. My politics do affect my fandom experience in notable ways. For one thing, I spend a lot of time these days noticing and thinking about subtle instances of misogyny and heterosexism in fanfiction. I feel that this is something that fandom really needs to work on, since we are a majority-female community who tend to think of ourselves as pro-queer.

I've made a commitment to avoid falling victim to these issues in my own writing. That being so, when I talk about pairings, I tend to list the characters alphabetically (Ginny/Harry, Remus/Sirius), rather than male/female, dom/sub, experienced/inexperienced. I will also try to avoid instances of slut-shaming and other forms of misogyny, or at least when I write misogynistic characters, make sure they are framed as such. Finally, I am working on not centering penetration as the only "real" sex, which is a common manifestation of heterosexism in fanfic. If you catch me doing any of these things, or anything else of a questionable nature, please do not be afraid to call me on it! I appreciate the input.

OK, y'all have been holding out on me. I've been writing HP slashfic for over seven years now, during which time I've been active in several large HP slash-related LJ comms, and yet somehow, it was only just today that I learned there is an annual HP slash con right here in Seattle. Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.

ETA: Oh, arse! I just realised it's the same weekend as my sister's 30th birthday!

Is it just me or does this article contain an unusually high bullshit quotient? It purports to be about the psychology behind the popularity of slash fic among female readers, but it doesn't sound like the authors even talked to any slash fans. Instead, it sounds like they had 22 members of a romance novel fan club read a gay romance and then fill out a survey about it. They also assume that what appeals to us sexually is based entirely on evolution; there's nothing to address cultural influences at all. A few stellar quotes:

"As time went by, virtually every cop, spy, adventure, and science fiction television series featuring two male partners was "slashed" [...] by some of its female fans."

- That's right; all slash is based on TV series, and only characters who are close friends or partners in the source material are ever the subject of such stories.

"One hypothesis that might account for the existence of slash is simply that the women who write and read this erotic subgenre are, in some yet-to-be-determined way, psychosexually unusual--analogous, for example, to male paraphiliacs."

- OK, I had to look up that word. Apparently we're possibly sexual deviants, similar to people who are attracted to inanimate objects or exploitative sex (rape, child molestation). Fortunately the authors consider this unlikely, since it turns out "normal" fans of romance novels can also enjoy romance between two male characters. Oh, thank you so much.

more ridiculousness under the cut )

The authors also wrote a book on the subject. It's called "Warrior Lovers: Erotic Fiction, Evolution, and Female Sexuality" (free e-book at link). Which has rave reviews at the posted link. If you can stomach reading 100 pages of this trash, please consider leaving a review to balance the others.

Title: Against the Wall
Word Count: ~1900
Rating: M
Warnings: Forced voyeurism
Genre: Smut, slash, mostly PWP
Pairing: Remus/Sirius
Summary: Sirius is irritable from his continued house arrest at Grimmauld Place, and Remus is tired of the way the Wizarding world looks down on him. They exact a little sweet revenge. Wall!sex with Walburga Black's portrait as an unwilling witness.
Notes: I blame all the filthy pervs at [livejournal.com profile] hp_adult for inspiring this one. I don't normally even write Second War fic.
pica_scribit: (Gryffindor - RL/SB - Tender)
OK, so I've come to terms with the fact that there is no earthly way I can squeeze out a chapter of ACOC today and also get the sleep I need to function. Yes, I suck. Here, have some puppy-lovin' instead.

Title: Highland Fling (3/8?)

Note: I've added a glossary of Scots terms to the bottom of all posted chapters. Some of them may be obvious, but I have no idea what's intuitive for other people, especially non-native English speakers. Hope it helps!

Excerpt:
His Aunt Fiona raised her eyebrows. "And how's it goin' wi' your laddie?"

Remus blushed and looked away. "I dinna ken. I think maybe I was wrong aboot him."

"The wa' he was lookin' at ye last night?" His aunt chuckled. "He couldna keep his een off ye! Nay, he fancies ye, right enough."

He made a face. "Weel, could ye tell him that? I dinna think he kens it, himself."

Excerpt:
He could tell right away that the third whiskey was something special. The aroma was completely different from that of the previous two, and when he brought it to his lips, the smooth, smoky flavor was like nothing he had ever tasted before. It sang in his throat without any of the burn the other liquor had carried.

When he lowered the glass, Remus was watching him. "Well?"

Sirius nodded. "It's good."

"Aye, it is."

Remus raised his own glass, closing his eyes and savoring the whiskey in his mouth for a long moment before swallowing. His tongue darted out to collect a drop that lingered on his lower lip, and Sirius realized he was staring again. He quickly buried his nose in his own glass before Remus could notice. If he didn't stop doing that, the other man might start to think he was gay, too, when really he was only a bit tipsy, and happened to be enjoying Remus's company.

Some of you probably saw this posted to my journal the other day, but it just *won't leave me alone* so I've given it its own page now, and might be working ever so slightly on Chapter Two tonight. ([livejournal.com profile] _jenc_, you still okay to Scot-pick for me?)

Title: Highland Fling
Word Count: In progress...
Rating: M
Warnings: Scottish Remus, American Sirius, mention of past sexual assault and cottaging
Genre: Romance, present-day non-magic AU
Pairing: Remus/Sirius
Summary: The summer before college, Sirius goes backpacking through Scotland in order to escape his family's expectations. In a small village in the Highlands, an unexpected flirtation turns his whole world upside down.

Excerpt:
"Auntie Fiona likes a bit o' help wi' the tourists, but honestly, I was just needin' to get away for a bit."

Sirius raised his glass in salute to the idea. "Right there with you. Do they not want you to do Geology or something?" He had warred long and hard with his own parents over his decision to minor in a "useless" subject like Art History.

"Nay, they were fine aboot the course," said Remus slowly. "It was more the other thing. Me wantin' to shag blokes. They dinna think much o' that."

This is mostly for [livejournal.com profile] _jenc_, who offered to Scotpick for me, but you know how I like to share. It's the start of a non-magic, present-day R/S romance that began its life as a piece of original fiction (with different character names, obviously, though they were always Remus and Sirius in my head) that was going to be submitted to an online contest for romance novels to be published as e-books, but I never got around to submitting it. As much as anything else, it's intended to be a love letter from me to Scotland, which I miss rather desperately. This is all there is at the moment, but it's something I'm planning to get back to once I finish ACOC, Year Two.

Title: Shirt-Lifter
Word Count: ~900
Rating: PG
Genre: Fluff, boyish romance
Pairing: Remus/Sirius
Timeline: Fifth year.
Synopsis: Sirius wants to try something, but Remus is a bit reluctant.
Disclaimer: Harry Potter characters and the Wizarding world are the sole property of J. K. Rowling. I own nothing except my own ideas, and make no profit. No copyright infringement is intended.
Notes: *glances about sheepishly* Hi, guys. Long time, no fandom .... I'm assistant-modding the [livejournal.com profile] rs_games at the moment, and I've been needing something to combat the overwhelming angstfest of the last few entries I read. So this is it. I'd love to fit this scene into A Conspiracy of Cartographers (which will be returning soon, I PROMISE!), but I don't think it will work for that, so it's going to have to stand on its own.

Title: A Cure For Nightmares, 7/12?
Author: [livejournal.com profile] pica_scribit (complete fic archive)

Chapter Synopsis: Sirius is miserable until Remus shares another secret that changes everything.
Chapter Warnings: Recreational drug use. Liberties taken with 1970's British boarding school culture.
Author's Note: I'm having a hard time working on this and A Conspiracy of Cartographers in tandem, so I think I'm just going to try and finish this, since it's shorter and easier, so I can devote the attention to aCoC that it deserves. Sorry if this is disappointing for anyone, but I promise that I will be getting back to it SOON.

Excerpt:
"Thought you'd be here," said the brown-haired boy. "Can I talk to you?"

Sirius nodded, and Remus slumped down the wall beside him, staring straight ahead. There was a moment's awkwardness before Sirius realised he was being less than sociable, and passed the joint to Remus. As Remus took a deep drag, Sirius cleared his throat, knowing that he owed it to Remus to admit his guilt before the other boy began leveling accusations at him.

"Sorry," he mumbled, eyes fixed on his hands. "So sorry. Was an awful thing to do. And I know you're not queer."

He held his breath, waiting to see what Remus would make of his apology. Remus had come to him, after all, he slowly realised, and it didn't seem a very Remus-like thing to do -- to smoke the last of his grass and then tell him to fuck off. So maybe --

Title: A Cure For Nightmares, 6/10?
Author: [livejournal.com profile] pica_scribit (complete fic archive)
Word Count: ~17,000 and counting
Genre: Drama, Romance, Non-Magic AU
Rating: R (so far, but will be NC-17)
Timeline: Marauders' 6th Year
Characters: Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, James Potter, Peter Pettigrew, and a few other familiar faces
Pairing(s): Remus/Sirius, mentioned James/Lily, Peter/OFC
Disclaimer: Harry Potter characters and the wizarding world are the sole property of J. K. Rowling. I own nothing except my own ideas, and make no profit. No copyright infringement is intended.

Chapter Synopsis: When Remus is triggered, Sirius can't help but react.
Chapter Warnings: Self-harm (cutting). Liberties taken with 1970's British boarding school culture.
Author's Note: Apologies for the long wait. I'm currently being eaten alive by job- and apartment-hunting. Apologies, too, if I have rendered a Guernsey accent badly here. It's been a very long time since I heard one.

Excerpt:
"Remus?" he ventured a whisper.

Slowly, Remus's head turned toward him, staring brown eyes fixed on his face, but he did not seem to register Sirius's presence at all.

"Remus, go to the loo or something," he begged. "Get out of here."

Remus did not so much as blink.

Tentatively, Sirius reached over to lay a hand on his wrist. "Remus --"

The boy reacted to the touch as if burned. He stood up so fast his chair overturned, and bolted from the classroom.

Title: A Cure For Nightmares, 5/8?
Author: [livejournal.com profile] pica_scribit (complete fic archive)
Word Count: ~14,000 and counting
Genre: Drama, Romance, Non-Magic AU
Rating: R (so far, but will be NC-17)
Timeline: Marauders' 6th Year
Characters: Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, James Potter, Peter Pettigrew, and a few other familiar faces
Pairing(s): Remus/Sirius, mentioned James/Lily, Peter/OFC
Disclaimer: Harry Potter characters and the wizarding world are the sole property of J. K. Rowling. I own nothing except my own ideas, and make no profit. No copyright infringement is intended.

Chapter Synopsis: Sirius tries very hard not to think of Remus "that way".
Chapter Warnings: None, really. Liberties taken with 1970's British boarding school culture.
Author's Note: I swear this story was never meant to have this much UST. I might need to reassess the number of chapters this is going to have....

Excerpt:
Sirius closed his eyes and thought of Remus, pushing away the memory of their conversation as if it had been only another bad dream -- Remus as he was now: sixteen and gangly, honey-brown hair falling into wary brown eyes, the long, straight nose, the full curve of a mouth only rarely visited by laughter --

With a huff of annoyance, Sirius turned over, shaking off the image as guilt squirmed in his guts. He shouldn't be thinking of Remus like that, either. That ripe, full mouth was triply off limits now. Remus was straight and he was a roommate and he had already suffered more than enough unwanted advances for one lifetime. Sirius had no right to think such things about him.

He's a friend, he told himself irritably. Not like James, but he could be someday if you'd just stop thinking stupid thoughts about him.
